BiosensUM will represent Canada in the 2019 edition of the SensUs competition for the second time. After learning from all the challenges we faced last year, we are proud to have formed a new team that is ready to take on this year’s objective! For 2019, our team BiosensUM from Université de Montréal, HEC, Polytechnique Montréal and McGill University is composed of bachelor and master level students specialized in chemistry, biochemistry, engineering, software engineering and marketing. Our team possesses a wide range of expertise, which will maximise our strength throughout the competition and allow us to learn from each other.

This competition is giving us the opportunity to apply the knowledge we acquired during our studies and to participate concretely in the advancement of healthcare innovation. We are really enthusiastic to work all together to build a small device that can make a big difference in the lives of patients. This year, we aim to develop a device as close as possible to commercialisation from the standpoint of portability, analytical precision and exactitude and user-friendliness.

Rheumatoid arthritis affects 1% of the world population and nearly 300 000 Canadians. We hope that our device will help improve their quality of life as well as the efficiency of treatment for the disease. We want to be the first group to offer a portable device for a rapid detection method that does not require sample preparation for the monitoring of Humira, the most commonly prescribed drug for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
